Following a standing ovation and applause from the Cabinet upon
President Zelenskyy's arrival, the Prime Minister opened Cabinet
by welcoming the President to Downing Street, remarking that this
meeting was a piece of history and the first time this century
that a foreign leader has addressed the Cabinet Room in person.
He said this demonstrates the high esteem in which President
Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people are held in the United
Kingdom, with people right across the country flying the flag for
Ukraine, and that he speaks for every member of Cabinet in
affirming that Ukraine has our unshakeable support. Further
underlining this the Prime Minister reiterated the UK's
commitment to standing with the President and people of Ukraine
for as long as it takes.
The Prime Minister then set out the recent action the UK
government has taken, including progress at the European
Political Community meeting at Blenheim Palace yesterday,
alongside reflecting on the profound impact of his previous visit
as Leader of the Opposition, where he saw not only the horror
inflicted on Ukraine, but the spirit of its people going about
their lives in the face of this.
Following President Zelenskyy's address to the Cabinet,
Secretaries of State reaffirmed their commitment to supporting
Ukraine on all fronts – from military and financial support, to
ensuring that Ukrainians living here are supported and feel
Britain's central message that we are all united behind them.
Cabinet agreed that the whole of the UK takes pride in standing
united with Ukraine – and that this is seen in communities across
the country - that threats to Ukraine's security are threats to
our security, that we are determined to squeeze Russia's war
machine through sanctions and ensure accountability for its
crimes.
