Scottish Labour has this morning demanded that ‘missing in
action' further education minister, , brings a statement to the
Scottish Parliament regarding how he intends to end the ongoing
strikes in the college sector.
Scotland's further education, already cut to the bone by the SNP
government, is currently in the midst of another wave of
industrial action – the ninth in only ten years.
Despite that, the SNP government has completely failed to act to
resolve the dispute, leaving students and education workers high
and dry.
This morning, Scottish Labour's education spokesperson has written to demanding a statement to the
Scottish Parliament regarding how he plans to end the current
dispute.
In the letter, Duncan-Glancy writes: “The
ongoing uncertainty this is creating in the sector is having a
detrimental impact on college staff, students and employers. I am
sure that you will agree with me that time is of the essence, and
that a solution must be found; indeed, I have called on you on
numerous occasions to intervene.
“Unfortunately, to date, the Government has done very little to
address this ongoing issue, and in fact you have stated
repeatedly that you believe it is not for the Government to
intervene.
“The sector is at breaking point, and what is needed is action by
the Scottish Government.
“On that basis, I am writing to ask that you come to the Chamber
of the Scottish Parliament and provide a statement on the college
sector and outline what your plan is to address the ongoing
industrial dispute.”
Commenting, said:
“Scotland's further education sector is in crisis but the
minister responsible has been missing-in-action.
“Scotland's students and education workers demand action to
resolve this dispute – it's time for to act.”
