Emily Thornberry comments on Cifas report saying criminals are using social media and AI to target consumers

Emily Thornberry MP, Labour's Shadow Attorney General, commenting on a Cifas report which finds criminals are using social media and AI to target consumers, said: 

"As Cifas have warned in this crucial report, we are on the edge of a precipice when it comes to the exploitation of AI software to facilitate identity theft and fraud. Families in Britain who already have to deal with 'Hi Mum' phone messages will soon be facing plausible calls for help using the AI-generated voices and images of their children.

“It is vital that the government gets ahead of the game in dealing with this new threat, rather than limping to catch up as they have so often been over the past ten years when facing these types of crime."
