A campaign backed by Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie calling on
supermarkets to implement an online ‘Buy British' button has been
a resounding success with retailers like Aldi and Tesco now
signed up.
Virginia signed an open letter calling in August last year with
her colleagues asking supermarkets to highlight the very best of
British produce by implementing a ‘Buy British' section
online.
The move would make it easier for people to buy homegrown produce
and support farmers on Ynys Môn and across Britain.
Since then, Tesco, Morrisons, Aldi, Sainsbury's, Ocado, Co-op and
Waitrose have signed up with only ASDA not yet agreeing.
“I am really pleased the campaign started by my colleague Dr Luke
Evans has been such a resounding success for shoppers and for
those businesses that grow and make some of the best produce in
the world,” said Virginia.
“Millions of people now shop online and before this campaign it
was often difficult to see what produce was homegrown even though
much British produce was clearly labelled in store. This anomaly
has largely been corrected and I thank the supermarkets for
listening.
“I am particularly pleased to see Aldi has signed up because of
my campaign to bring Aldi to Amlwch. This supermarket is
committed to backing British produce and a new store there would
reinforce that for local people and give us all much more choice
where we shop.”
End.
