The Holocaust Memorial Bill Select Committee (Lords) has
announced its programme of sessions to hear petitions against the
Bill submitted in the House of Lords.
These sessions follow petitions heard by the Select Committee in
the House of Commons earlier this year. In April 2024, the
Committee published a report where they raised various concerns
about the project including rising costs but concluded that they
would not seek to amend the bill. Read their report here.
The Holocaust Memorial Bill seeks to make provision for
expenditure on the construction and operation of a Holocaust
memorial and learning centre. It would also remove restrictions
on building these in Victoria Tower Gardens, which is next to
Parliament.
The Committee provides individuals and bodies directly and
specially affected by the Bill with the opportunity to petition
against the Bill's specific provisions and to seek its amendment.
The Committee is chaired by retired judge .
On Wednesday 16 October, the Committee heard from the Bill's
promoter – legal representatives of the Ministry for Housing,
Communities and Local Government. Watch it here. During this first
phase of sessions, the committee will hear from petitioners whose
ability to object the bill is being challenged by the
government. Petitioners that have already appeared before
the committee are , , , and of Burry Port.
After the Committee has narrowed down which petitioners from this
group should be heard they will conduct a further round of
sessions.
