The London Assembly Environment
Committee has today responded to Ofwat's
consultation on the PR2024 draft determinations, which set out
the level of service that customers can expect from water
companies and the prices that companies can charge between 2025
and 2030.
Zack Polanski AM, Chair of the Environment Committee, said:
“Londoners are paying the price for water provision that is not
up to standard.
“Ofwat's PR2024 draft determination on Thames Water states that
its business plan is inadequate, and the company will be subject
to a financial penalty if it does not improve its plan.
“The London Assembly Environment Committee undertook an
investigation into Water and London's Rivers last year and
published its conclusions in March 2024.
“Our work highlighted three specific areas for improvement;
reducing water leakage, ensuring water remains affordable, and
greater enforcement and prevention of pollution events.
“We strongly support Ofwat's focus on pricing and intent to limit
bill increases to ensure the affordability of water for customers
in London.
“While we support setting clear targets for Thames Water to
reduce water leakage in London, we are calling for a more
ambitious target of 25 per cent reduction by 2029-30, instead of
the currently proposed 19%.
“The London Assembly is elected to work on behalf of Londoners,
and the ongoing issues Thames Water customers continue to face
must be addressed.
“We hope to see the necessary changes made and Londoners receive
the level of service they deserve.”
