Letter from MP, Labour's Shadow Energy Security and Net Zero
Secretary, to on the government's
failure to address the prepayment meter scandal.
Dear Secretary of State,
On Sunday during a media interview you acknowledged the
government's continuing failure to secure redress for those
affected by the prepayment meter (PPM) scandal.
During the worst energy security crisis in a generation, the
government stood by as thousands of families had their homes
forcibly entered into by energy companies in order for them to
install PPMs.
It is a grave injustice that - more than a year after the
Conservative government promised compensation for all affected
families – 99% of those affected have received nothing at all.
You have now acknowledged that this is ‘completely unacceptable'
and that you would ‘like to see everybody get the compensation
that they need'.
The blame for this failure lies with you and your government. The
scandal happened on your watch, you promised action and to date
you have completely failed to make it happen.
The British public deserve a government that will stand up for
the families who struggled most when energy bills rocketed.
Can you therefore explain:
- What steps are you taking to ensure
every affected family gets the compensation they deserve?
- When can all the families waiting
for compensation expect to receive it?
- Will the government give the House
a regular update on these figures, until all the families
affected receive compensation?
Given the public interest in this matter, I will be releasing
this letter to the press.
Your sincerely,
MP
Shadow Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero
