The SNP has called for to identify and sack a Tory
minister who said they were “worried there might be peace in the
Middle East” in case it further damages the Tory Party’s
electoral chances.
It comes after a growing backlash following the news that a Tory
minister made the comments to Sky News Deputy Political Editor
.
For five months, the UK government has refused to back SNP calls
for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel. It has also
refused to support SNP calls for meaningful action to pile
pressure on the Israeli government to stop the collective
punishment of the Palestinian people - including by ending arms
sales to Israel and using its role on the UN Security Council to
demand an immediate ceasefire.
Commenting, SNP foreign affairs spokesperson Brendan O’Hara MP
said:
“The UK government has repeatedly blocked SNP calls for an
immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel - and now it seems Tory
ministers actively want to prevent a ceasefire in case it harms
their electoral chances.
“People in Scotland will be disgusted by these comments, which
show the values of Westminster couldn’t be further removed from
Scotland - where the overwhelming majority want an immediate
ceasefire now.
“30,000 children, women and men have been killed in Palestine and
Tory ministers are more concerned about their electoral chances
than securing peace. It’s shameful.
“Rishi Sunak must launch an investigation to identify and sack
the minister responsible for these comments - and he must end his
opposition to calling for an immediate ceasefire.
“The SNP will continue to pile pressure on the UK government to
back an immediate ceasefire. Instead of sitting in silence while
innocent Palestinians are killed, the UK government must stand up
to Benjamin Netanyahu and take concrete steps to help secure an
immediate ceasefire, including ending arms sales to Israel and
using its position on the UN Security Council to demand one.”
